Asteroids or planets might trigger a supernova

A handful of impacts from rocky debris in the atmosphere of a white dwarf, the core of a long dead star, could trigger a powerful explosion known as a type 1a supernova.

A supernova is not merely a bigger nova. In a nova, only the star's surface explodes. In a supernova, the star's core collapses and then explodes.

Inquisitive
Looks like gravitational imbalance generated by sudden change of the asteroid/debris resulting any addition of gravitational force to the outer layers of the star at the critical stage of its explosion as supernova.

Once a supernova event is discovered and reported, the big telescopes all over the world study the event. Then the object fades away over several days and all one is left with is a number and a location recorded in a computer database somewhere.
