When we talk about ice mass in Antarctica people need to understand there are two types of ice, land ice and sea ice. Land ice is the ice that has accumulated on the Antarctica landmass through snowfall over thousands of years. The land ice is therefore actually stored ocean water that once fell as precipitation. Sea ice is very different. Sea ice is the ice that either comes from ice shifted from the land or forms in salt water during the winter months in south hemisphere. This story may well prove that more and more land ice are melting in the summer due to global warming and being pushed into the previous open waters.
