It was probably a satellite asteroid that was captured by the larger one and then traveled along side it. Look. You've got trillions of these things. Sometimes, some of them are going to do things that you might not think possible if the solar system was 1 year old. It's not. It's 4.5 billion years old, last time I checked. So the odds of a few trillion objects orbiting around over 4 billion years and combine that with us having just a few decades of watching... Those odds aren't really all that great after all. It's just that in your life time means that you have a myopic point of view.
