Outside the parks, urban areas, where the population is wild overlap with people and their pets, the researchers found several Wildcats who had different levels of internal DNA. Only in protected areas were sufficiently protected wild cats from domestic cats remain genetically pure.
The key to protecting the African wild cat believes in keeping them away from populated and wild cats found there.

The inbreeding problem has been known for a while. South African researchers have viewed it as one of the major threats to the African wildcat. But as this was the first study to assess whether it was actually occurring and where, I thought it was worth a look. Especially given that inbreeding has nearly wiped out all of the genetically pure Scottish wildcats.
