The school lunch, the children are likely to eat the yummiest elements, and then drop the rest in the trash. But a new study finds that children eat more fruits and vegetables, when the school recess occurs before lunch, not after.

David Price and equitable, director of the Cornell Center for Behavioral Economics child nutrition programs at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, looked at seven elementary schools in the School District of Utah. Three of the schools have moved recess to before lunch and four schools continued to hold recess after lunch. For four days in spring and autumn nine days, the researchers measured how many fruits and vegetables each student ate for lunch. Three schools who have made the switch, did it in the fall.

The very same premise by which all people function.
People who work hard, exercise, get sunshine and fresh air are invariably healthier in mind and body. When you work and play hard you're hungry so you eat well and you're tired so you sleep well.

Introduce them to veggies when they're young. Studies show eating habits are formed in the first 5 years or so.

What isn't addressed is how well the kids perform within the classroom immediately after having eaten lunch (vs playground). Who focuses best, those coming in from recess or those coming from the cafeteria?
